Fall in the desert

A sunny afternoon at Arizona State University’s
Downtown Campus.

It’s a lie that all Phoenix folks tell new arrivals: “It cools off after Halloween. You just have to make it to the end of October.”

Technically, yes, it does cool down. It’s not often 118 in late October. But, it’s not crispy Fall weather by any stretch of the imagination.

And yet, during my visit to Cactus Land this week, I felt a distinct twinge of Fall. The desert version anyway.

The day’s 85-degree warmth gave way to a cool evening breeze. The people and the trees seemed more relaxed than when I saw them a few months ago. (If you don’t think trees can be uptight, then you haven’t seen the defensive posture of Phoenix’s green things in mid-Summer swelter.)

I’ll be excited to see “winter” next month!
